GLOBALPLATFORM TECHNICAL TRAINING AT WIMA 2008

16:00 – 18:00, on Tuesday 29 April in Monaco

Workshop Abstract:

As of October 2007, 1.4 billion GSM cards utilize GlobalPlatform technology for Over-The-Air (OTA) application download.  An estimated 70 million GSM cards apply the entire GlobalPlatform card framework for SIM applications, and more than 195 million people use GlobalPlatform cards for financial, transit or government interactions.

GlobalPlatform works extensively with different markets to harmonize specifications and simplify the adoption of standardized, interoperable smart card technology.  By working with many partners, GlobalPlatform aims to develop technology to facilitate new business opportunities between the mobile sector and other markets, regardless of infrastructure.  Within this technical workshop, GlobalPlatform will explain to delegates how various business models can be applied within one implementation securely, while ensuring the technology is interoperable, flexible, scalable and reactive to future requirements.

Technology – Card Specification v2.2
PART 1

The session will focus on outlining the benefits of adopting GlobalPlatform Card Specification v2.2, and the functionality that the technology can offer.  This specification was voted a finalist in the Innovation category of the annual Card Technology Breakthrough Awards 2007, a category that acknowledges the biggest advance in smart card technology in 2006, and has been incorporated into the ISO / IEC 7816-13 international standard: commands for application management in a multi-application environment.

*Learning outcome: At an introductory level, the presentation will explain the basic elements of implementing GlobalPlatform Card Specification v2.2, outlining the main roles of the actors involved.

PART 2
The second part of the program will provide an insight on updating a GlobalPlatform card (SIM or embedded secure element), how to load an application onto a GlobalPlatform card OTA, and the latest advancements of GlobalPlatform’s Confidential Card Content Management (C3 Mgt) technology.

C3 Mgt

This most recent specification amendment supports enhanced OTA services and enables application providers to confidentially and independently manage applications while using a third party’s infrastructure.  Created by GlobalPlatform, working in partnership with the GSM Association (GSMA) and the European Telecommunications Standardization Institute (ETSI), the amendment is of significant importance to:
-  Application providers that offer end user services exclusive of a mobile infrastructure
-  Mobile operators that want to establish a neutral infrastructure capable of allowing approved application providers to mange their applets OTA on an end-users SIM.

*Learning outcome: How delegates can create a new application provider ‘space’ in the security domain, and how an issuer’s management policy can authorize an application provider to use this ‘space’ to load, install and personalize applications autonomously.

End User Selection

A further enhancement to GlobalPlatform Card Specification v2.2 will enable the technology to facilitate end user application selection within a contactless mobile environment.  This new amendment will offer additional tools for issuers and application providers that will ease the selection of contactless services by the end user via the reader, and standardize the contactless reader infrastructure on application selection in a secure element.

*Learning outcome: Delegates will be updated on how to store additional information, such as commercial logos and the type of service to be provided for example payment or transit, onto a GlobalPlatform card to assist the user in deciding which service to use. This includes understanding how the activation state of all applications will be securely managed,  and how technical information, like the contactless protocol combined with the integration of the Proximity Payment Systems Environment (PPSE) from EMVCo, will facilitate the service selection by the reader to perform the transaction.

PART 3

The final element of the technical training contribution will summarize GlobalPlatform’s future work to facilitate mass adoption of SIM technology.  In particular, the module will outline GlobalPlatform’s intent to define a configuration for Universal Integrated Circuit Cards (UICC) products to support the deployment of enhanced SIM contactless to a global market.

*Learning outcome: An outline of the minimum set of services that are required to support a UICC for addressing the world wide web contactless market, and how this can support business models to enable services to be deployed in different market environments.
